Gas Safe

The Gas Safe Register office registration scheme is for maintenance engineers dealing with natural gas appliances in the UK. Every five years an engineer's Gas Safe license will expire and will need to be renewed before the engineer can continue working. If you are unsure whether an engineer is Gas Safe registered to work with a specific type of gas it will be clearly marked on the back of the engineers gas safe register registration card.

It is not acceptable for a Gas Safe registered engineer to sign off any gas work done by a person who is not registered with Gas Safe. However a non-registered engineer can carry out some wet work such as installing water pipes and radiators for a heating system, but can not work on the final connection of the pipework to the boiler.

New engineers that have no previous history, who have had a history of complaints or have a record of unsafe gas work will have to have a time limited probationary period. During this probationary period the engineer will have all their gas work inspected by a gas safe register inspector. The Gas Safe register has only been in effect since 2007 after replacing the CORGI registration. This was result of a review in 2006 by the Health and Safety Executive, it was introduced to bring in a clearer focus on gas safety as well as to simplify the registration and competence requirements for gas engineers without compromising safety or service standards.
